3 Reasons to Visit in Fall

See Fall Colors in Alaska

Vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds, can be found all across Alaska as the season turns from summer to fall. Blueberry bushes are full of ripe berries, birch forests turn gold, and the mountains start to get their first dusting of snow.

Fall colors in Alaska are a beautiful sight – especially when set against the deep blue of the glacier. Our full day ride out the Knik Glacier offers beautiful views of the valley as you ride to the glacier. Enjoy splashing through creeks, looking for wildlife, and exploring along the shore of a glacier lake.

Fall colors are best seen when you get off the highway and into the backcountry. Choose a ride, flight, or hike to get out and see the fall foliage before the season passes!

Explore with Less Crowds in Shoulder Season

Another great reason to visit in the fall is that there are less crowds as the summer season winds down. Enjoy less road traffic and quieter trails as the seasons change. Restaurants will be less busy and tours will have more time options.

Another perk to fall is that hotel or airbnb stays and car rentals are more affordable as summer peak season has passed. This way you can put more of your budget towards checking off more adventures from your Alaska bucket list!

Have a Chance to See the Northern Lights

Sunsets return to Alaska which means there’s a chance that you could watch the Northern Lights dance across the sky. Sometimes the aurora can be seen as early as late August!

You’ll want to look north for a chance to see the lights. Traveling to Denali or Fairbanks may increase your chances of seeing the aurora depending on the forecast.

Check the Aurora Forecast or Aurora Viewline to get an idea of what the upcoming days look like for your chances of seeing the lights. The Aurora Tracker is a great tool for those visiting the Fairbanks area.

A KP index of 4 or higher tends to indicate a solar storm that will create a vibrant & viewable aurora!

You can also get the My Aurora app to help you catch the lights. This app can alert you when there is a higher chance of the lights, predict when they will be at their height so that you know when to check outside, and help you look at the upcoming forecast.

Be prepared to chase the lights with warm layers and hot drinks. Make chasing after the lights a fun adventure!
